Multi-Objective Multi-Scale Optimization of Composite Structures, Application to an Aircraft Overhead Locker Made with Bio-Composites

The use of composite materials has grown exponentially in transport structures due to their weight reduction advantages, added capability adapt the material properties and internal micro-structure requirements application. This flexibility allows design highly efficient that can reduce environmental impact transport, especially if used composites are bio-based. In order structures, numerical models tools predict structural performance great importance. present paper, authors propose a multi-objective, multi-scale optimization procedure aimed obtain best possible structure for given developed is applied an aircraft secondary structure, overhead locker, made with sandwich laminate which both, skins core, bio-materials. model been coupled Genetic Algorithm perform design. Two cases presented. first one consists single-objective problem fibre alignment improve stiffness structure. second shows advantages using multi-objective approach. this last case, objective function corresponds shelf stiffness, minimizing number fibres placed woven directions, looking cost weight. obtained results both have proved software optimal need consider macro-structural micro-structural configuration composite, solution. presented approach optimisation configurations.
